35 Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God.
This scripture is talking about the humble who were dealing with persecutions from those "who professed to belong to the church of God" but had been "lifted up in pride" (Helming 3:33-34). Despite having to endure that, which I'm sure was frustrating and heartbreaking at times, they were able to hold fast. How were they able to get through the mocking and scorning of their peers who had once had the same understanding and humility as they did?
Fasting and prayer.
Fasting is something I have been trying to gain a testimony of. I have definitely seen many blessings come from it, but I still struggle at times. I love that this scripture shows so many of the blessings you can receive from fasting and prayer.
I would rather have these promised blessings than the praise and approval of the world. This scripture helps me to keep trying and to put more faith and trust in Christ by keeping His commandment to fast and pray often.
Fasting becomes a joy when we are able to make that leap from the world and the flesh to things of the spirit. My patriarchal blessing tells me to learn fasting, that it will increase my faith and through faith I may walk to God. I think it is true that fasting doesn't come naturally and has to be learned. I also think that we cannot come to God without sufficient faith so it is all connected and important. Thanks for the post

ReplyDeleteA great verse of scripture. I think for many (including myself) fasting is a form of sacrifice. The thought of fasting is not something I immediately relish although I have seen the spiritual power it generates on a number of occasions.
Recently I have been realizing the importance of humility. I believe me looking at my pride and trying to overcome it has brought more spiritual growth and increased my faith. True fasting and true prayer are both activities that encourage true humility. I need to work on those more diligently :)
