Agency

This past week in our Book of Mormon class we talked a little bit about agency. Agency is necessary for the Plan of Salvation take place. With out agency we would not learn and experience things in the way we need to. Our purpose is to become like Christ and our Heavenly Father; without agency we would not be able to accomplish this purpose. Although we sometimes joke around that we wish people didn't have their agency, in the end we really would not want that. We fought for this gift in the Pre-mortal life and there has got to be a good reason for that!

In 2 Nephi 2 we learn that there are 4 things needed in order to have moral agency

  1. Know good and evil
  2. There must be a law
  3. Opposition in all things
  4. Enticed by one of the other
Without these 4 components we would not be able to truly exercise our agency.

I like the definition of agency in Webster's 1828 dictionary:

The quality of moving or of exerting power; the state of being in action; action; operation; instrumentality; as, the agency of providence in the natural world.

I especially liked that it says "instrumentality." We can use our agency to be an instrument in the Lord's hand and serve Him with our might, mind, and strength. That is the best use of our agency for our eternal progression.

I am grateful for all the experiences I've been able to have and learn from because of agency!

  1. Agency is so important to understand. Those days when I am truly aware of how much agency I really have in my life are the days when I truly know I NEED the atonement! I am thankful for the opportunity to learn through experience, grow and repent.
