And He Suffereth it

I was reading a couple days ago in 1 Nephi 19 when Nephi makes the other plates and decides to keeps the more sacred things on them. The very first thing he starts talking about is Christ and His atonement which if not the most important doctrine then it is among the most important doctrines. There is a specific part I’d like to talk about in verse 9.

And the world, because of their iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught; wherefore they scourge him, and he suffereth it; and they smite him, and he suffereth it. Yea, they spit upon him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and his long-suffering towards the children of men

Nephi talks about some of the things that happened to Jesus like judging, scourging, smiting and spitting which at the end of each description, he says "and he suffereth it." This is a great example of humility and how we can improve our daily lives just by "suffering it." Now I don't mean that we are going to suffer a lot things like that or anything close to what Christ suffered but i'm saying that there are a lot of things that we can in this sense, suffer. Maybe these things can be pet peeves, little things someone does or road rage. If we can develop the mindset of ignoring, not paying attention to or not "seeing" these things then whole range of things could improve in our lives. Now there is a key part to all of this and it is the last sentence in the verse, "because of his loving kindness and his long-suffering towards the children of men." Christ's love towards others allowed him to ignore all those things people did to him, it allowed him to get passed it, to see passed it. This can sometimes be a pretty difficult task, that is why it takes time to develop even a portion of this love and the only way we are going to develop this level of love is through Him because he is the only person that has lived on this earth that has experienced that type of love. This loving kindness that Jesus had, is the way we should see people, including ourselves, as we really are; Gods imperfect children that are in a mortal, hard, temptation filled world who indeed have a lot of potential.

  1. Pretty amazing; it would be awesome if we were all striving to have this same reaction towards one another.

  2. I have been working on this! Whenever I start to spend time thinking about someone or something that bothers me or makes me agitated, I put it behind me and think of something more productive. I have noticed I am much happier and at peace throughout the day and therefore I treat others more kindly. :) Great stuff!
